What will happen (Thursday 30 June, 2005)

30. červen 2005

On Tuesday I received an e-mail from one of our readers. He wrote "I have been following your project for many years and I would like to know what your plans are for this year". I only read his e-mail now because until yesterday evening I was busy in forests of the Baltic region. We have big plans.

Last time we informed in May about searching for Altynai. We equipped her with a transmitter two years ago in Siberia and this year during her return journey from her wintering grounds she died in Pakistan. Actually she was probably killed but the cause of her dead has not been solved. Last year we monitored two storks from central Mongolia. Tuya returned happily to her nest and I dare to say that about Chingiz as well. His transmitter started malfunctioning during his return journey and finally stopped functioning at all. It was obviously because of technical reason and Chingiz should be in good condition.

The New Odyssey will continue in the next year. We will nevertheless make a small step backwards, meaning to the west. Storks from central Mongolia flew along a direct route to Burma but we would like to see how will the storks manage crossing the Himalayas. That is why we would like to catch and equip three storks in Mongolia but much more to the west in comparison with last year. Apart from that we are planning to take off Tuya's and Chingiz's "backpacks". There will be two teams operating in Mongolia. Our colleagues are departing there on Saturday and from next week we will be providing online reports from Mongolia. Also Dobré jitro (ČRo 2 - Praha) will be broadcasting live every Monday and Thursday after half past seven.

(I am very sad that this time I am unable to go to Mongolia, moreover that until this year I have been a part of every trip. Family and work reasons do not allow me to leave for a longer period of time.)

Apart from New Odyssey black storks will be monitored as part of Flying over Natura 2000 project. We will give details about this in August. At the moment I will reveal that it will be about observing of black storks from number of European countries, including Czech Republic.
