Shinda

7. listopad 2005

Hello, my name is Shinda, which is a Swahili name meaning Victoria (victorious). I also come from tropical Africa and am a lowland gorilla. I was born on 14th June 1991 in Apeldoorn, in the Netherlands, but for many years I lived on the other side of the world, in Sydney.

I lived at the Prague Zoo for a while, and then at Dvůr Králové. On 16th October 2003, I moved back to Prague with my sister Kijivu. I have to share Richard with Kijivu and Kamba but that is not big deal. He is so handsome that we are not jealous at each other. I am also very proud that I am little Moya's aunt and soon I should have three nephews or nieces!

In the year 1999 I was given a hormonal birth control implant in Sydney because my father started to become interested in me. Unfortunately no one has been able to remove it since then, and it continues to affect my ability to reproduce to this day, so that right now I can't have any children.

One day I could have twins. Sometimes this happens after stopping with contraception in the case of humans. I am looking forward to my first child. I heard that it can happen early. One day it just has to come.

People sometime point at me that I have a very big stomach and look as if I am pregnant. That is a result of my hormonal problems. I don't eat much more than the other females. My favourite food is fresh fruit tree bark and root vegetable.

I try to look good in front of Richard so he likes me. But how it usually goes with gorilla males, their love is very short indeed.

You can write to me or leave me a message on my personal electronic e-mail address at: shinda@rozhlas.cz

Our keeper Marek Ždánský says: "She's probably the most dangerous of them all. I have to be constantly on my guard to make sure she doesn't attack us." And he's right, so you better watch out!
