Musical and radio dramaturg and composer Jiří Teml (born 1935) received his music education privately from Bohumil Dušek while studying at the Higher School of Economics. In 1964–1974, he studied composition with Jiří Jaroch. In 1976–1980, he worked as a musical dramaturg and director of the music department of Czechoslovak radio in Pilsen.
As a composer, he started composing popular compositions for dancing. Later he focused on larger forms of vocal (especially children’s choirs), chamber and orchestral music.
Since late 1970s, during his traditional period, he focused on so-called New music. Having intensively studied the latest streams of contemporary music, especially so-called Polish school, he came to a new aesthetic point of view and he changed his artistic orientation. He significantly accentuated timbre of his style, he stressed its inventivity and he opened up space for an original style. He deliberately aims to add Czech accent to his music that is encoded in melody structure and rhythmicity of his music but also in a certain choice of combinations of instruments.
In his vocal compositions, he often builds upon a folklore base, he stylizes distinct elements of folk melody structure and rhythm, and he lets the natural songfullness and simple tunes sound that are mostly taken from folk poetry. He devotes intensively to Czech folklore as well and he regularly works with folk ensemble of Czech radio in Pilsen on vocal and instrumental arrangements of folk songs and dances.
