Surprises, one after the other (Thursday 21th November 2002)
Nothing noticable has happened for weeks. Now I am not sure whether to write first about Katerina, Chinese winter grounds or about Petr...
Durin yesterday, Petr continued on his way. He reached more than 60 km southeastward till half past seven GMT; it was just a beginning of his yesterday's ?move?. Now we are impatiently waiting for new data... - As Lubos Peske noted today, Petr is flying along the mountain road directing to Kabul. At least one of the three storks that we marked could winterize approximately where we supposed to ? in Pakistan or India.
We have mentioned the complicated situation of Katerina several times. Yesterday, we succeeded to get in touch with Chinese ornithologist Mr Ma Ming who lives in Urumqi. To our surprise, he wrote that approximately in places, where Katerina is, the black storks usually winterize, concretely near Wens and Akto! Even if the temperatures are -10 to 5 Celsius...
Another surprise was that, according to the coordinates, Katerina set off ot the west-south-west yesterday evening! Where she's flying to is questionableas there are high mountains ahead of here. Perhaps she will finally winterize in Tarim basin, but in its other part...
